‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from injury table to scoring with Athletic

Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in England, an 18-year-old representing Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at the English ground in fall 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he played in England, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. Another occasion, against the Citizens soon after, indeed, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they took him off.

“I was furious,” the attacker admits, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I don’t know about Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the facility, the city, the morning session is ready to commence; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu and another flight to Britain, now to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a tough year for the club, due in part to the demands of being here. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he admits.

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the Donostiarra team that developed the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in that summer, he experienced a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the top level but with every stage you go through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his bow and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it made me change the outlook. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then go home, as a youngster does. At the complex, you have everything, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All the minor details: perform them.

“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles 200,000 times. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. He left upset in that year, aged 23, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and should the time come a vacancy arises where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. Particularly after last year which, sometimes, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with 16 in 2023-24, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
