I Believe I Already Have Must-Play Title of 2026.

After playing well over 200 fresh titles this year, I'm formally turning the page on 2025. My annual roundup is published, and I'm satisfied with the ultimate rankings, accepting that plenty of fantastic releases may have dropped by the wayside. Currently, my only plan is to other than unwind, disconnect briefly, and possibly go for a nice walk in the— well, shoot, discovered one more great game. There go my intentions!

A Surprising Front-Runner Appears

With my casual gaming time, typically earmarked for a selection of unusual games, I've come across potentially my earliest beloved game of 2026. Sol Cesto is a distinctive roguelike for Windows PC that breaks down a traditional dungeon crawler into a probability-fueled game of significant risk risk and reward. Take this as an early adopter's heads-up: If you take pride being aware of a game before it hits the mainstream, sample Sol Cesto so you can punch a hole in your indie credit card.

A Strategic Dungeon-Crawling Innovation

Sol Cesto is a thought-provoking procedural game that's different from everything I've previously experienced. The concept is that you need to explore a dungeon, progressing deeper and deeper on a quest for the sun, which has vanished from the fantasy world. In practice, this creates some familiar roguelike structure. Select a character who has parameters and powers, fight through each level of monsters, pick up some passive buffs (represented as teeth), and vanquish a few biome bosses. Easy to grasp!

The Unique Central System

The method by which you truly navigate a dungeon room, however. Every time you enter a new floor, you're shown a 4x4 grid of boxes. Each square either contains a monster, a treasure chest, a trap, or a healing strawberry. To proceed, you just select on one of the four rows, but the exact space you select is determined by luck.

You might see a row with a pair of enemies, a strawberry, and a treasure chest in it. You start with a one-in-four probability of landing on a specific tile in a row.

After that, the odds shift. So do you take the risk, or do you click on a safer line first and attempt some more cautious selections early? That's the risk-reward dynamic on display in Sol Cesto, and it's absorbing once you get an understanding of it.

Influencing Chance

The roguelike twist is that your percentages can be shaped during an attempt by gathering teeth that modify the types of squares you're more likely to land on. To illustrate, you may obtain a perk that will lower your chances of hitting a trap, but will also decrease the odds of finding a reward too.

  • Developing a strategy is about influencing the statistics to the utmost to have a higher chance at selecting the optimal square.
  • During one attempt, I put all my stat upgrades toward melee prowess and picked as many teeth I could that would boost my chances of landing on monsters of that variety.
  • In another run, I constructed my hero around treasure chests and paired that with a perk that would debuff nearby foes each time I secured loot.

The strategic possibilities are limited, but there's enough to experiment with to enable you to influence probabilities according to your strategy.

A Constant Risk

Of course, it's still a game of chance. You constantly face the risk that you have an 80% chance to land on the square you want but ultimately choose a foe that would deplete your final hit point. All selections is a gamble, so there's a constant tension as you navigate a level and determine if to keep clicking or to proceed to the subsequent stage instead of risking it all.

Consumables including explosive devices assist in minimizing the chance, just like some special skills. An adventurer's unique ability, charged after making four moves, lets gamers to select a vertical column in place of a row on a turn. By employing your cards right, you can hold that ability for an optimal time to circumvent a perilous selection. There's a shocking level of strategy in the seemingly straightforward task of clicking.

Looking Ahead

Sol Cesto is currently in development, and it has at least one more update planned until the complete edition is unleashed. A new character and a new boss are expected to drop by the end of January. The 1.0 release probably isn't long after, but the studio haven't committed to a concrete launch day yet.

A Parting Recommendation

Whenever it's fully released, you might want to put Sol Cesto on your radar. I have been positively obsessed with it, finding all of hidden nuances and banking my earned gold every session to reveal a continuous trickle of meta progression rewards, including additional heroes and items purchasable while playing. To this day, I have not found the deepest level, and I suspect I will remain pursuing that objective when 1.0 finally hits. I'm committed for the long haul.
