Lando Norris Advances Nearer to Title as Max Verstappen Secures Las Vegas Grand Prix Victory
The McLaren driver currently holds a 30-point advantage over teammate Oscar Piastri with only fifty-eight points up for grabs in the remaining events
McLaren's Lando Norris stepped closer to his first world title with second place in the Vegas race behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen
The British driver now leads teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished in fourth place behind Mercedes' George Russell, by 30 points heading to the penultimate race in Qatar this coming weekend
Norris will win the title in the desert as long as he does not lose over five points to Piastri in Losail, or seventeen to Verstappen
The Australian driver, so impressive in the opening stages of the championship, has failed to finish on the top three for six consecutive events
"Max had a strong performance. I erred at the beginning and was overly aggressive on that opening corner," stated Norris
"It remains a positive outcome to secure second place. I've got to praise Verstappen and his team"
Following Qatar, the last event of the championship takes place in Abu Dhabi on 7 December
The main developments of one of Formula 1's most high-profile races included:
Lando Norris continued his progress towards the title despite the win to Max Verstappen
Piastri's difficult run of form persisted as his championship chances diminish
A superb win for Max Verstappen to maintain him in the title fight
Recoveries for both Ferrari drivers, after a difficult qualifying session, with Lewis Hamilton securing a point for 10th after beginning at the rear
Max Verstappen Stays in Title Battle
Max Verstappen passes Norris at the beginning after the British driver went off line at the opening turn
From the beginning, Lando Norris was faithful to his claim that he was "not here to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to protect his advantage from pole position from Max Verstappen
But after an aggressive move in front of the Red Bull driver to head off the Dutchman's challenge on the inner line, Norris miscalculated his braking point and went too deep into the corner
That allowed Verstappen to overtake into the lead while Norris also the runner-up spot to Russell
During two VSC periods for several opening-lap incidents, including at the start when the Racing Bulls Liam Lawson collided with Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen slowly established dominance on the event
Russell undertook an early pit stop for the more durable compound, but Lando Norris and Verstappen remained on track
The McLaren driver stopped five circuits following the Mercedes and Max Verstappen 10
The Red Bull driver was able to rejoin still in the first place, Russell having been unable to close in on the Red Bull car even with his newer rubber
Norris returned after Russell from his stop but after a several careful circuits to allow his tires to warm up, soon closed his three-point-three second gap to the Mercedes and overtook into runner-up position on lap 34
Norris inquired his engineer how to run the rest of his race, essentially asking whether he should accept second place or attack
He was told to "go and get Max" but it soon became clear he had no chance. Max Verstappen was easily could repel Norris' attacks, and in the closing stages the gap extended significantly as the McLaren car began to suffer a technical issue which has so far remained unidentified
Even with dropping nearly three seconds a lap, Lando Norris was could defend against Russell because of the extent of the advantage he had established while chasing Verstappen
The Verstappen's sixth win of the championship - only one behind both McLaren drivers - was achieved in dominant fashion and maintains him in title contention, at least mathematically, although he needs issues for Lando Norris in both remaining races to pass him
"It remains a big gap, we always try to optimize everything we've got," Verstappen said
"During the coming events we will try to win the race and at the end of Abu Dhabi we will know where we end up, but I'm very proud of the entire team"
Disappointing Event' for Oscar Piastri
Piastri began fifth but lost two places on the opening lap after being hit by Liam Lawson, who was quickly taken out of contention by a broken nose section
He trailed Liam Lawson's teammate Isack Hadjar for the first 15 laps before overtaking him on the Strip but also out to Charles Leclerc, who he was able to overtake again during the pit-stop period
The Australian ended up behind the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, who ran almost the entire race on the durable compound following stopping during the initial VSC, but was given a five second time penalty for a starting procedure infringement, which was not immediately obvious on video reviews
"It proved to be a disappointing event from essentially beginning to end in some ways," Oscar Piastri informed BBC Radio 5 Live
Questioned about how he would tackle the remaining events, he said: "Just attempt to position myself in the best position I can. I obviously require several of factors to go my way now to take the title, but my only option is make myself in the ideal situation to capitalise if something happens"
Charles Leclerc held on in sixth place, not close enough to benefit from Kimi Antonelli's penalty, while Sainz dropped to seventh place at the finish, his Williams car lacking the speed to challenge with the leading outfits in the dry, after his impressive showing to start third in the wet weather
Hadjar secured eighth ahead of the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg and Lewis Hamilton
The seven-time champion made a flying start, rising to thirteenth on the opening circuit and continued to advance positions
He became trapped in a slipstream group with a bunch of other cars but was could use his electric start to rescue a championship point following the poorest qualifying performance of his career
