Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the early names in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the team's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have historic links to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the ex- Luton head coach - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves board as they begin the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a surprising choice given he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
